Three Sculptures: Tony Cragg

17 March - 16 April 2021
Overview
There are many more things that do not exist than things that do exist

This is Tony Cragg's axiom, and the driving force behind the acclaimed British sculptor's practice. His biomorphic sculptures made from glass, steel, bronze, iron and wood blend the organic world around us with the industrial to create new forms of immense and at times alien beauty. In a time when installation projects dominate contemporary art, Cragg is obstinately dedicated to materiality and its effect on human emotion. As a result he is constantly pushing the expressive potential of sculpture even further.

Three Sculptures celebrates the materiality of bronze showcased within three works spanning from 2007 to 2017. These sculptures are designed to elicit an emotional response; Cragg believes that mankind is grounded in our emotional reaction to the sensorial world around us - what we can see, and touch, and taste. But we also have an intuitive desire to understand how things work. Cragg's sculptures, which are borne from rigorous experimentation, capture at once the chemical structure of the material, and a sense of organic growth.
