The Wellesley St Window Project 2012 is a series of temporary exhibitions in our window space on Wellesley St. Selected following a call for proposals, the series brings together a group of six dynamic artists to exhibit with us on a project basis. The window space will be activated by new and exciting works by Vincent Ward  (13 June – 7 July), Iain Cheesman (11 July – 4 August), Hannah Valentine (8 August – 1 September), Jill Sorensen (5 – 28 September), Becky Nunes (3 – 27 October), Matt Ellwood (31 October – 24 November).
 

The window is located on Wellesley St, just down from the Auckland Art Gallery and intersection of Kitchener and Wellesley Streets. The project dates are timed to coincide with our regular exhibition schedule.

Sweethearts

For the Wellesley St Window project Matt Ellwood presents Sweethearts. Sweethearts utilises the famous Lego crocodile in order to call into question the language of the miniature, in this case rescaling the toy up to a barely full grown Siamese crocodile, one of the most endangered of the species. In effect these two can be considered as Siamese Siamese. The title is also an oblique reference to the infamous 5.1 metre Australian crocodile that terrorised the Northern Territories between 1974 and 1979. The work itself is intended to oscillate between intimacy, male posturing, genetic deformity, and formal symmetry.
 
 


Matt Ellwood employs the various vocabularies of children’s toys, movie merchandising, outdated men’s magazines and current low-end advertising as abundant resources for appropriation-based sculptures, drawings, and digital prints. These are set up as allegorical filters for a playful, but equally perverse subversion of the ideological master discourses surrounding desire, consumption, and censorship.
 
Born in Wellington, 1973, Matt Ellwood graduated with a Master of Fine Arts (1st class honours) from Elam School of Fine Arts in 2003. Recently he has been included in Warwick Brown’s Seen This Century a collector’s guide book, 2009, and was the Wallace Kaipara Foundation award recipient in 2011, where he received a 3 month residency in Solothurn, Switzerland, April to July this year.
