Emotionally Unsaturated: David McCracken

25 June - 19 July 2014 Auckland City
Overview

In Emotionally Unsaturated David McCracken works industrial materials into fluid form, filling the space with stainless and cor-ten steel structures that surpass our material expectations.

David McCracken’s new exhibition is paired back to a small collection of sculptural works. Extending on ideas explored in Portraits of Mass and Transmission (2012) the interpretation of two large works oscillates between function and form. They have strong industrial qualities yet a fluidity of form and stylistic eloquence suggests that they are not purely functional.

By comparison to the large cor-ten steel works, which through exposure to the elements develop a stable rust-like appearance, a scallop-shaped stainless steel work is highly polished. Its immaculate surface reflects its surrounding, suggesting an ephemeral quality to the work as it appears to transcend its material physicality.
