December 2009 I Darryn George Wall Work at TeTuhi, December 2009 - March 2010

Ngapuhi artist Darryn George is known for his minimal abstractions which draw from both Christian symbolism and his Maori heritage. For his Drawing Wall project at Te Tuhi he consolidates elements from both his recent room sized wall paintings and his extensive body of abstract paintings.

Darryn George Te Tuhi

The Drawing Wall provides a site for George to develop crossovers between his canvas and wall based works. Working directly on the wall, he creates a giant abstract painting which is formed from duplicating elements of a previous composition Rehita across the wall. This method of repeating elements recalls the kowhaiwhai panels that George frequently references in his room sized work. Yet this methodology also recalls important New Zealand abstractionists such as Gordon Walters, particularly in George's use of simplified forms which are laid over a rich bright surface. George's Drawing Wall project teases out these dual references - expanding his abstract vocabulary and collapsing his painting methodologies.  SOURCED: Te Tuhi website

The exhibition opens 12 December and runs to 10 March 2010.26.03.08 I Darryn George in Mana Magazine

Darryn George I Pulse
Pulse is a fusion of customary Maori art and contemporary abstract painting. Using intricate patterns of red, black and white Darryn George will full the entire space, floor to ceiling of the Sutton Gallery with a continual pulse of light and pattern. Begins 8 March 2008  William A. Sutton Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery

2007 I Darryn George at the City Gallery Wellington
Darryn George has been invited to participate in one of four artists projects curated by Sarah Farrar for the City Gallery in Wellington. 'Contemporary Projects' will see the interior of the South Gallery partitioned into four separate but interconnected rooms intended to house each of the projects. While not united by theme or subject matter it is anticipated that each unique exhibition space will provide the opportunity for individual expression whilst also generating a broader dialogue between the artists and their works. Installations by Eve Armstrong, Sarah Jane Parton and Areta Wilkinson complete the exhibition which runs from August 11 - November 4, 2007.

Darryn George secures Deutsche Bank commission
Darryn George has been successful in securing a major commission for Deutsche Bank New Zealand. Georges artwork was selected among four designs proposed to adorn a 16 metre long wall made of smart glass located in Deutsche Banks Wyndam St premises. Georges design will exploit the unique properties of the glass which is charged with an electrical current. When the current is disabled the glass becomes opaque thus concealing certain aspects of the design. When activated the glass becomes fully transparent revealing a full 16 metre long art work. It is proposed that the commission will be completed by mid June 2007.
